Escoltes Resilients (Resilient Schools) project is an initiative promoted by BATEC with the main objective of providing educational centres with the tools and knowledge needed to tackle the climate crisis, through concrete actions both within the school and towards its wider community and town.
The project takes an integrated approach, addressing challenges and solutions from both an environmental sustainability and a community sustainability perspective, while also proposing viable funding strategies. Sustainability culture is at the heart of the project, around which diagnostic tools and transformation support strategies have been developed.
All of this takes place within a context that promotes networking and the exchange of best practices, helping to guide transformation processes with clear and local reference points. To this end, the Resilient Schools Community has been created, offering targeted sessions, online resources, and innovative proposals. One example is the creation of school-based energy communities to enable and support the financing and implementation of healthier and more sustainable initiatives.
The project is structured around four main areas of action, each with specific goals:
Sustainability culture: Promote a new culture of sustainability in schools to respond to the Climate Emergency and help transition towards an eco-social model, moving away from the paradigm of unlimited resource consumption and waste production. The aim is to make schools key spaces for social integration and community life, not only through educational content but also through the creation of learning environments that promote environmental awareness, social responsibility, and environmental, social and economic sustainability.
Tools and diagnostics: Develop tools and diagnostics to help schools become more resilient, with assessments and solutions that enable adaptation to climate emergency scenarios, incorporating environmental (water, energy, comfort) and social criteria.
Funding: Search for, adapt, and develop specific funding mechanisms for Resilient Schools, through a dedicated team that works on building a sustainable funding network to ensure that schools can access the financial resources they need in the future.
Community: Build the Resilient Schools Community, energising a network of stakeholders where schools and other facilities committed to the project can exchange knowledge, experiences and resources, promoting collaboration and mutual learning among sustainable entities.
With the support of Escolescoop, the project has involved 7 cooperative schools that actively participated in the diagnostic activities and received a roadmap to help improve their sustainability. In addition, 18 schools currently take part in the Resilient Schools Community.
